Whether you're planning an international trip or you just prefer not to be financially tied to your carrier, it's never a bad idea to buy your next phone unlocked. Amazon has a huge selection of unlocked phones to choose from, including the ever-popular Galaxy Note 9, and the options span across all different price ranges.
Our pick
Samsung Galaxy Note 9
The Galaxy Note 9 is one of the most versatile and powerful phones on the market. You get top-end specs across the board, plus all of the hardware features you expect: waterproofing, wireless charging, an SD card slot, a headphone jack, and more. The S Pen has been refreshed too, with remote capabilities for controlling features like music playback and the camera shutter from a distance. Just about anyone looking for a high-end phone will love using the Note 9.
Best under $400
Moto Z3 Play
Motorola's 2018 refresh to its modular mid-range series is a great way to get a nearly stock build of Android without shelling out for a Pixel 3. Its slim design accommodates a number of Moto Mod attachments, ranging from speakers to projectors and even a Polaroid printer. Best of all, you can grab the Moto Z3 Play with the Power Pack Mod that extends battery life, all while staying just under $400.
Best under $300
Huawei P20 Lite
Huawei took the gorgeous design traits of its P20 Pro flagship and created an affordable mid-range device with a huge screen, tiny bezels, and, yep, a small notch up top. The dual cameras perform great, and there's a speedy rear fingerprint sensor along with facial recognition. Huawei's EMUI software isn't for everyone, but it performs well and contributes to the P20 Lite's great battery life.
Best under $200
Nokia 6.1
It's hard to believe how much phone you can get these days for so little money. For just $200, the Nokia 6.1 features a beautiful aluminum design, a 5.5-inch (albeit still 16:9) 1080p display, and a clean build of Oreo through Android One, which promises years of regular software updates. The 3000mAh battery easily makes it through the day, and the camera is surprisingly great for the money.
Best under $150
Nokia 5
The Nokia 5 squeezes even more value than the 6.1 while retaining a great aluminum unibody design and a clean build of Android Oreo. The trade-offs? The 5.2-inch has only a 720p resolution, it charges through Micro-USB, and it isn't part of Android One, meaning it isn't guaranteed regular updates — though Nokia has done a good job of keeping the 5 up to date anyway. Those minor gripes aside, this is still a phenomenal device when you consider that it costs less than $150 unlocked.
If money is no object, you should, by all means, go for the Galaxy Note 9 — it's the best phone for most people, with just about every feature you could possibly want in a phone. The other offerings from Motorola, Huawei, and Nokia, however, provide great experiences at much more affordable prices, though. No matter your budget, there's a good chance you can find a reliable unlocked phone on Amazon.
