Samsung unveils the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge: Refined design, new 12MP camera and waterproofing

After months of speculation, leaks and rumors, the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are finally official.

Samsung has a solid strategy to exceed the hype set out for any new high-end device from the company — it comes down to sticking with what worked in the last generation, plus adding in some strategically-chosen features. As was the case in 2015, Samsung is going with a double phone release, meaning we're getting both the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. Unlike last year, we're getting two different sizes of phones at the same time.

The Galaxy S7 is the phone for the masses with a compact size and 5.1-inch display, while the GS7 edge is a bit more aspirational with a 5.5-inch display that has Samsung's signature curved edges that both look interesting and are paired with new software experiences. Beyond the size and display curvature, these phones are identical — and that's a good thing.

On the outside, it's a progression from the metal-and-glass design of the Galaxy S6. We now have curved edges on the rear glass — much like the Galaxy Note 5 — that match up with a familiar metal frame, while the camera bump is now far less pronounced and Samsung has dropped some of the shiny embellishments around the home button and camera assembly. There are three new colors for the Galaxy S7 edge — black, gold and silver — that are shiny as ever, while the Galaxy S7 proper will only be available in black and gold.

On the inside, you'll find a bump up to 4GB of RAM paired with either a top-notch Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (in the U.S.) or Samsung's latest Exynos chip (for international versions). Samsung heard the complaints when it came to battery life in the Galaxy S6, and they've addressed those complaints with a 3000 mAh cell in the Galaxy S7 and a whopping 3600 mAh in the edge. 32GB of storage will be your only option (at least in the U.S.), but the highly-requested microSD card slot is returning to offer you up to 200GB of expandable storage. When it comes to the camera, the resolution drops to 12MP on the rear shooter, but it now has a brighter ƒ/1.7 lens, larger 1.4-micron pixels and faster auto focusing — all while retaining OIS and great capture speed.

The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge also mark the start of the Marshmallow era for Samsung. Though we've seen glimpses of the Android 6.0 implementation of TouchWiz in beta for previous devices, these two are launching on the fully-baked version. It's a general cleaning up of the interface, with a simpler color palette in some places and a further flattening that started taking place in the last generation. There are still tons of features here, and Samsung has now added a dedicated gaming mode, as well as an always-on display functionality for when the screen is off. The so-called "edge UX" on the GS7 edge now has more capabilities — harkening back to the Galaxy Note Edge and can take up more of the display.

As is always the case Samsung's carrier partners will be announcing pricing and availability in countries around the world. And be sure to keep it locked on Android Central for all of the latest Galaxy S7 and S7 edge coverage!
