We now have a follow-up to last year's Ellipsis 7 tablet: the Ellipsis 8. Like its predecessor, this isn't a high-end tablet by any means — it's a cheap and easy way onto the Verizon network, in this case the AWS-laden XLTE network. But it is an improvement, bringing an 8-inch HD display to the party for $149 with a 2-year contract.

While Verizon calls is a "full HD" display, it's not what we would call HD in these parts. The 8-inch display has a resolution of 1280x800, giving it a density of 189ppi. That's not awful, especially for a tablet of this price, it it's also about on-par with the first-generation Nexus 7 (and not even the newer Nexus 7.
Apart from that, it's got a 5000mAh battery to power things for up to 14.51 hours (yes, 14.51 — Verizon was very specific here) and an unspecified 1.5GHz quad-core processor. There's a 5 megapixel camera around back if you feel so inclined to do some tablet photography. And there's a Verizon Messages app pre-installed (with plenty of other Verizon bloatware, we're sure) for sending text messages from your personal Verizon phone number. Verizon's not specified which version of Android this runs, though it appears to be a largely unaltered version of Android 4.4 KitKat. We hope.
