The Home Hub is down to just $99 right now.
Google launched a lot of new hardware toys this year, the most popular of which is the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. We're big fans of the Pixel 3 series here at AC, but the product that we're even more stoked about is the Google Home Hub. The Home Hub is Google's latest smart speaker, and even though it just came out not that long ago, we're inclined to say it's the best addition in the Google Home lineup yet. Seriously.
The Google Home Hub is already pretty affordable for a product in its niche at $150, but in honor of the beast that is Black Friday, it's been discounted to a jaw-droppingly cheap $99.
If this is your first time reading about the Home Hub, the best way to think about it is like a Google Home but with a screen slapped on it. It's a pretty simple concept, but the execution here is ridiculously good.
This might be the most adorable smart speaker/display we've ever seen.
With the Google Assistant built into the Home Hub, you can talk to it just like you would on your phone or any other Assistant-powered smart speaker. The Assistant's your own personal, well, assistant for telling you about your calendar, controlling all of your smart home devices, making phone calls, finding answers to any burning questions on your mind, and just about anything else you can think of. The responses are mostly the same as what you'd get on other Assistant devices, but because of the addition of the 7-inch screen, they're more helpful than ever before.
Want to know what the weather's going to be like? The Assistant will read out the current temp while also showing a visual forecast for the next few days. If you ask it to set a timer, you'll see one pop up on the display and can watch it tick down to 0.
There are also some Smart Display-specific features, such as being able to use it to watch YouTube videos and follow step-by-step recipes while making dinner. If you ask it something like "how to tie a tie", you'll be shown a video on how to do it rather than having the answer read aloud like on a screen-less speaker.
Have a lot of smart home tech? Just swipe down from the top of the Home Hub's screen and you'll get a little hub that tells you what lights are on, what your thermostat is set to, and if your doors are locked. There are also quick buttons for accessing the controls for all of these devices. It's a small touch, but it makes the Home Hub the perfect device for managing all of these devices.
As for the hardware of the Home Hub, Google knocked it out of the park. It's a lot smaller in person than it looks online, making it perfect for just about any room in your home. Plus, since there's no camera unlike Smart Displays from Lenovo and JBL, it'll be a lot more appealing for the privacy-conscious that want a gadget like this for the bedroom.
The LCD screen looks fantastic, the fabric base has that signature Google touch, and it's available in Chalk, Charcoal, Aqua, and Sand colors. We do wish that the built-in speakers were a bit more powerful, but if you have other Assistant speakers in your home, you can supplement this by adding the Home Hub to a multi-room audio group.
The Google Home Mini is still the cheapest Google Assistant speaker you can get (especially at its Black Friday pricing of $25), but if you can spare the additional $75, the Home Hub really is something special. We gave it a 5 out of 5 in our full review, and that was with the $150 price tag in mind. For $50 off, it's a no-brainer.
